So there's new censored version Huckleberry Finn

Postby Vanbael » Thu Jan 06, 2011 4:37 pm

For those of you familiar with Mark Twain's writings, you probably read Huckleberry Finn. Now the deal is that they are going to censor nigger and replace it with 'slave.' (I'm sorry if this is a rule break but this is meant in a peaceful and non bias/hate terms). I'm all for keeping it to keep the racial context within the literature.

So, now you know my answer, what's your take on the deal?

My answer is that of me laughing my arse off.

Let the way people wrote be seen! A word is but a word. Screw what is politically correct always. There's a reason it was that way back then, and reading it as it was gives insight to the way people thought.

I'd also ike to point out that Huck frees a slave...

I posted something about this in the Concession Forum's thread on censorship. To sum it up, i swore a bit and said how ridiculous this all is and that they should not do this, I'd fuckin' protest that's for sure.

I dont agree with the editing of the book. The use of the N word in it is because it was used in that way during that time period. Whats next? The dairy of Anne frank being edited becuase people find the word Nazi offensive? I dont care if a book is made up or based on real events if the story is based in a time period they should be allowed to use words that depict that time.

i havent read huckleberry finn, but i have read Tom Sawyer.
as for the use of the "n" word, thats just fine.
you know how many times i've been called "the N word"? i lost count. (i'm white)
i've heard black people call each other "the N word"
it's in music sung by black people.
for goodness' sake! people need to grow up and stop being offended by a word.
this actually reminds of a story...
Zahldar wrote:a school where i live actually tried to ban "the adventures of Tom Sawyer" because of the word "Nigger".
apparently, a local black student got all offended by it, when the teacher read it out loud in the class (they were all reading while the teacher read out-loud).
so...she bitched to her parents, who bitched at the school...fortunately, the librarian and her assistant, are better at bitching than the parents so it is still in the library...all this while there is a book in the library (a middle school, mind you) that has the word "dick" in bold, large font...

it's a word... and has lost all meaning when a black person says it. but when a WHITE person says it...oh... my... god! racist! racist! racist!

but enough of that...deep breaths zahldar...deep breaths...

That is utter hogwash. You can't just go and censor a classic literary piece; the word's use wasn't even intended to be offensive, it was intended to be accurate. Screw resurrecting Mark Twain; how about I just go over there and eat his brains? After all, resurrecting takes a lot of time and preparation, and if you don't do it just right, you'll only worsen the situation.

In my opinion, if you censor the new version, you're screwing up the whole plot-line of the original story. I will agree with Tsukihana that Twain had the N-word in the book for a reason. It's not like Twain did that with no purpose in mind. If people get offended because they think it's racist, then that's their problem. If they want to have their minds stuck in the 1800s or God-knows-whenever-in-the-past, DON'T FUCKING READ THE BOOK OR WATCH THE GODDAMNED MOVIE THEN. :omg:
