Reiteration of Some Rules (I.e. READ THIS, IT'S IMPORTANT)

Postby QuetzaDrake » Mon Dec 14, 2009 1:52 am

"IX. Try to speak English. Use proper grammar, spelling, punctuation, and format with every post. Also, it's alright if you speak a little of other languages (Spanish, for example), but please respect that most people won't be able to understand you and that you should probably talk in English."

"AMENDMENT I. This amendment can be considered additions to rules VI and VIII. Posts must be an actual sentence (not just a fragment) and, outside of the Random forum, please TRY to make them at least 5 words long. No more one-word posts, please.

Also, please do not just post relentlessly to every topic you see without having a thought-out reply in mind. If all you have to say is a very short, one or two-word comment, think it out more and add more to the conversation. This will be taken as spam from now on."

I've noticed a lot of newer people are coming in here and kinda talking like it's a chatroom. By that I mean sentences are uncapitalized, words are misspelled, punctuation is either missing or overused... And, y'know, the above stuff are actual Forum Rules, y'know, stuff I could very well warn and ban for.

I'm not trying to be some kind of grammar nazi dictator jerk, I just want the place to be presentable and at least a little... more "professional" looking? I don't want people coming in here and seeing something like a forum for 12 year old XBox Live players or something.

So you people know who you are, let's cut this stuff out, huh? I'm gonna start PMing and warning people, and I really hope I won't have to but I'll ban if I'm not listened to. I'm not trying to be a jerk, again, but don't think people are gonna learn without some reinforcement.

Yeah, reading Stryker's posts made my head hurt a little.

Quoted for truth.

I mean it's okay if you make the occasional mistake, whether that'd be spelling, punctuation etc. but when you're guarenteed to make multiple errors in every single post it becomes really annonying.

The problem is when you tell these people (not mentioning any names) to use proper spelling and grammar and maybe put their posts through a program such as Microsoft Word (although that won't remove all the mistakes) they just completely ignore you and continue to post mind-numbingly bad content.

Anyway, hopefully this thread and the rule enforcements will help solve that problem...

Yeah, a few people in particular were buggin' me with grammar. Could the spelling and grammar part include the random room too?

And...

lol. Sorry, had to point it out.
Create an illusion so strong that it becomes another's reality, and you can become the master of all.

Lol... Serves me right for typing on an iPod I guess! However, you get my (or more specifically QD's) point that it becomes a problem. As for if the rules should be extended to the random room: I'm going to go on a whim and say no. It will be a pain to read, but it doesn't add to the post count so I could care less if they don't think before posting (I myself don't really put too much consideration to what I post in the random room).

I must agree with the enforcement of this rule. I don't want to come off as a total bastard if anyone happens to be dyslexic or anything, and I admitedly write in an 'accent' sometimes... Still, misspellings and improper grammar is a bit of a pet peeve for me... Most of all, the short, one-liner posts that may not even qualify as an actual sentence.

An honest error here or there every once in a while has never harmed anyone, but if it gets to the point where every post by someone is a horrid mess that bastardizes the English language... Then that's an issue that needs to be resolved. I understand if some computers lack a spell check feature (the computers at my college for instance... go figure...) and some MS Word programs my 'hide' whatever errors they pick up (again, my college computers), I'd still try to consider it as homework for whatever Language Arts class anyone might take... So this is actually a very practical and benefiting rule to everyone, all-in-all... Even if they might not realize it...

I know that I am one of those people I type in a hurry and forget punctuation all the time.

but really though. I think that you should at least be able to read it, and it'll be good enough...
and you can't take away my elipses :|

Still, why Reinforcement QD? there are other ways of encouraging good online behavior

Because I really actually don't wanna seem like a jerkass moderator dictator fella and wanna give people a chance to improve instead of just booting them for spelling things wrong.

Yes Sir! General Quetzadrake sir!

I agree with this amendment too, especially after the argument with Stryker. My brain and eyes had a hard time with that. So, this is reasonable. I had to say wtf are you saying for every second post.

Capitalize the first letter of the first word of every sentence. It helps with readability - that's why the practice was invented.

Agreed, I've not been on the forums very long, but I can understand the frustration of people using the forums as a chat room. Isn't that what chat rooms are made for? XD
